Touring Caravan General Market FAQ’s
CaSSOA is a recognised membership body providing security accreditations for secure caravan storage sites. A CaSSOA storage site gives you peace of mind by minimising security risks to your caravan and will likely have features like perimeter fencing, lockable gates, CCTV and monitored entry and exit, to and from the site. A CaSSOA accreditation is given following an independent survey and the site will be awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze status depending on the security features at the site. If you store your caravan at a CaSSOA storage facility, CaravanPlan will offer you a discount on your caravan insurance.
- Bronze accreditation is the CaSSOA entry-level award. To achieve a bronze award, the site must meet minimum security requirements, including perimeter protection and lockable gates.
- Silver accreditation requires that enhanced security is in place such as CCTV and monitored entry and exit of the site.
- Gold accreditation is the highest award, with these sites offering the highest levels of security.
Having a person riding in a caravan on a public road is against the law. Caravans are not designed to be crash-proof as they are made from light aluminium, plastic, plywood and fibreglass on a chassis. There are no seat belts or air bags inside a caravan and other items stored inside can become dangerous to passengers in the event of a crash.
If you passed your driving test before the start of 1997 you can tow a car and caravan combination weighing up to 8,250 kg as a standard driving licence will include categories B + E.
If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 and have an ordinary category B (car) licence, you can drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes or 3,500kg MAM (maximum authorised mass) towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM. Or you can tow a trailer over 750kg as long as the combined weight of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg. This can prove difficult with some modern caravans and towcars. However, it is possible to take an additional driving test to get the B + E categories added to you licence. Bear in mind also that it’s recommended that the weight of your loaded caravan is no more than 85% of your towcar’s kerb weight for a stable towing outfit.
No you don’t. Touring caravans and motorhomes are covered by the TV Licence at the owner’s home address and so do not need an extra licence.
If you’re planning a holiday to Europe in your caravan then you might need new documentation to allow you to travel. As this is an evolving matter, we bring you the latest updates on Green Cards and other documentation here. We’ll update this blog post as and when new information becomes available.
Caravan insurance by law is not a legal requirement. However, without it you’ll likely have to pay for repairs or a replacement out of your own pocket following accident damage you cause, or after storm damage or theft.
Most comprehensive car insurance policies cover you to tow a trailer, up to a certain length, but usually only for third party liability. This means that you would be covered for any injury to another person or damage to their property. However, your policy would not pay out to repair damage suffered by your caravan or if your caravan was stolen.
Caravans don’t need an MOT but it’s the owner’s responsibility to make sure the caravan is safe to travel on the road and an annual service is recommended to check it is roadworthy and that gas, electrical and water systems are working properly. It is a condition of our policy to make sure that the caravan is maintained in a sound and roadworthy condition and all precautions taken to prevent and minimise any claims.
